Litter Data

The students of Year 10 were told to collect and record the type and amount of rubbish we found in our sections of the beach. This raw data that we collected was then transformed into data that we could anaylse and examine.

As clearly shown in pie chart #1 (showing the total percentage of different types of litter) The vast majority of the litter collected involved those of plastic. This plastic is due to the local stores & vendors that sell these bags to beach goers and tourists, whom leave their rubbish on the beach when in the area. Other materials & paper also have large percentages found on the beach, they may have been used as an alternate wrapping to the stores & vendors or involve individuals literring or trashing their items on the beach. The least amount of rubbish collected included those of glass & metal. This can be seen as a good thing as the lack of glass & metal means the beach is relatively safe from any safety hazards.

In pie chart #2 (shwoing the types of liteer collected by my group) you can see the the amount of different types of litter that was collected in our designated area. This percentage differs quite a bit to the total percentage. Unlike the first pie chart, Other & Plastic are closer in percentages but not as high as the first pie chart. We collected a vast majority of Plastics & other materials, this due to the fact we were the group closest to the local stores & shops. an eighth of the data collected involved paper, while the remaining 5 percent involved glass & metal. The lack of glass and metal yet again show good signs of safety in the area.

In ratio of the first chart to the second, there was a lot of plastic to be found in our area of the beach. This is a sign that, tourists and beach goers are not responsible with their rubbish simply trashing it onto the beach rather than into a bin. This may be due to the lack of rubbish bins around. This suggests that pantai Morib has not been properly planned out as a town, as they have not put enough signs maybe to alert people to not trash their rubbish.

This could be one step to help decrease the amount of litter found at Pantai Morib.

The kite diagram above shows us a collection of all the data collected by all the groups along the beach (group 1 being furthest from the mangroves and group 9 being the closest) It tells us where vast majority of litter was found in one area and where it lacked in others. From this, we can see that Large amounts of Plastic & other materials can be found all along the beach. Plastic hasn't got a lot of inward lines meaning there are high amount of it all along the beach, This suggests that their may be other potential reason ;other than longshore drifting, to why there is plastic being spread along the beach. Other materials comsume the next highest amount spread along the beach although high in the amount found it is spread unevenly across the beach, The majority of other materials can be found in groups 3 & 7.

Minimal amount of glass and metal were found along the beach only peaking slightly around the middle section of the beach (groups 4-7) they are yet again unevenly distributed along the coast yet concerning amount of glass is found near the mangrove area.

Paper can be found heavily in some areas and minimal in others. Along the far side of the mangroves, paper can be found heavily in group 4. as you get closer to the mangrove however, it decreases slightly to a point where no paper is found at all (this may be due to the lack of data collection by the group) from that point it slowly increases as you get closer to the mangrove, reaching it's highest point at group 9.

From this chart we can see proof of life along the coast of the beach. Human interaction can be found all along the coast, but the vast majority is located near the stores & shops as well as the mangroves.
