Introduction

about 30km north of Bagan Lalang, Selangor. Pantai Morib is referred to as the ‘Gold Coast of Malaysia’ Just about an hours drive from the Australian International School Malaysia this beach has become a popular holiday destination for the locals here in Malaysia.

Apart from their well structured playgrounds, walkways & facilities, their beach is constantly being eroded away by heavy coastal erosion. A lot of processes and structures have been built in attempt to save the beach but, they have not been efficient.

The process that is eroding the beach at Pantai Morib is known as Longshore drifting. Longshore drifting consists of the transportation of sediment, sand & other small particles along the coast of a beach in an angled manner to the shoreline. The angle of the drift is dependent on the prevailing winds, backwash and swash of the ocean.

At Pantai Morib, this erosion only takes place on one side of the beach as the other side is protected by a mangrove system. Mangroves are known and have proven to be great natural sea defences against eroding beaches. They are adapted to live in harsh coastal conditions. They contain a complex salt filtration system and complex root system that is able to cope with salt water immersion and wave action. They are great sea defences as they are natural, easy to maintain and aren’t displeasing to the eye.

The solution to solving the erosion of the beach is more complex than what meets the eye, there are various different people with conflicting opinions on what should be done about the beach. as it is a popular holiday getaway destination, many tourists come and go.

This increases the amount of noise and litter pollution which disrupts the locals who live nearby. Conflicting opinions also influence the reason why the Beach is not being acted on faster as Tourists don’t want much done physically to the beach other than for it to be cleaned up but the lack of physical change won’t help sustain the beach as more or better sea defences need to be installed for there to be a beach. This is just one example of how complex the situation is.

The aim of this project is to find an alternate solution to suggest “How Pantai Morib can be sustainably managed” with data that helps prove how my solution is a good solution.
